Can drinking water help you lose weight?

Can drinking water help you lose weight? According to a report by CNN, YES.

Drinking more water may help you lose weight if you have a couple of glasses of water 20 – 30 minutes before meals. Research shows that drinking water before meals can help you eat less. Drinking adequate amounts of water can also prevent you from becoming dehydrated, which slows down your metabolism. Drinking water isn’t a panacea for weight control, but it does play an important part in helping the body reach and maintain a healthy weight.

Acid/Alkaline theory of weight loss is nonsense

One popular theory often associated with alkaline water and diet is “Dr.” Robert O. Young’s acid/alkaline theory. This theory is pure nonsense, and it can be easily disproven. The theory states that if a person’s body accumulates too much acid, the body will store it in fat cells.

Fact is, there are lots of skinny people (teenagers on junk food diets) that eat highly acidic diets which have no effect on their weight. The popular Atkin’s Diet is also acid-forming, and people lose weight on it.

How drinking water affects weight

Before Meals – A study conducted by Dr. Brenda Davy published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association revealed that people who drink 2 glasses of water 20 – 30 minutes before meals ate an average of 75 fewer calories per meal.

Hydration – It is difficult for the body to differentiate between hunger and thirst. If you allow yourself to become dehydrated, you may end up eating more than you need to. Dehydration also slows down your metabolism. Even just 1% dehydration will have an effect on your metabolism!

Is alkaline water better than plain water?

Alkaline water is better than plain water but not for the reasons many people believe. A low pH balance in the urine has been correlated with metabolic syndrome, one of the symptoms of which is excess weight. But correlation does not imply causality! A low urine pH balance may be symptomatic of a body that has trouble managing its own weight, but it is not necessarily the cause!

Alkaline water is better than plain water for one simple reason, it tastes better! Taste may not seem to be a big deal, but if increasing your intake of water is part of your weight loss plans, better tasting water can help you want to drink more water!

Drinking water is a great way to get calcium and magnesium in your diet. Both of these minerals play an important role in regulating your body’s metabolism. An alkaline water ionizer makes it convenient to get essential mineral nutrition and healthy hydration in every glass of water you drink!

Has the FDA evaluated alkaline water for weight loss?

No. But the minerals in alkaline water are recognized by the FDA for their contribution to human nutrition. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.  The preceding information and/or products are for educational purposes only and are not meant to diagnose, prescribe, or treat illness.
